About the Artist:
Brenda Burnett Ball
This is going to be short.

I have no art training or education at all.

I don't think I've taken an art class since 6th grade - that was sometime in the 60's.

I don't have a degree in anything.

I wasn't "always interested in art ever since I was young".

I wasn't interested at all until I was in my late 30's.

Then I just kind of exploded.

Then I had chronic depression for about 10 years and imploded.

Hopefully, I'm re-exploding now.

Completely self-taught artist.

No Guru, No Method, No Teacher.
(thanks, Van Morrison!)

What is it?

These are all eggshell mosaics, mosaic art pieces made with tiny pieces of egg shell. I have been working with egg shell mosaics for about 16 years, although I stopped for about 10 years. I’ve sold pieces at art fairs, but never tried selling mosaics on the web.
Mostly, I work on wood, but I have worked on papermache, glass and metal. I clean the membrane thoroughly from the egg shell and then I color them. They are NOT painted. Painting would create a flat all-one color and if you look closely at the closeup photos, you can see that each egg shell has color variegation. This creates the true look of mosaics. I use a translucent mixture that I mix up myself.
Then I apply the eggshells with a special glue to the painted wood. I push them down flat and make sure that they do not overlap with another piece. When done, I seal the whole piece with gloss varnish. They feel like real mosaics too, smooth but with some texture and cool to the touch. These are MADE to be touched and can be cleaned with simply a slightly damp cloth.

Closeup of Night Sky Mosaic

A Great Horned Owl in shades of tan, brown, yellow, burnt umber, white and black covered in tiny pieces of egg shell. The moon is done in pearlized white egg shells and it really does seem to glow. The background is three different hues of dark blue with many shades of those blues.
This is a piece of 12" x 17" oak plywood, sealed with gesso. The sides of the plywood are painted dark blue and the back is painted white and signed and dated. The owl is painted on top of that, in just basic colors - most of the details and shading are done with egg shells.
The egg shells are very firmly applied and flattened, then the whole top is sealed with gloss varnish. This maintains a certain 'feel' of mosaics, but it's very secure - those egg shells pieces are not going anywhere.
There is a sawtooth hanger on the back top for easy hanging to a nail or hook.
A word or two about copyright. This is an original piece created by me using photographs of a Great Horned Owl as references. I retain all rights to this mosaic image.

Lunar Moth Mosaic Closeup

This piece started with a color.
I'm in love with blue, and I'm usually very faithful. Once in a while a purple, or a dark green will catch my eye, but I stay true to blue. But one day, in April - not yet spring because spring comes late to Maine, I was playing around with a pearlized medium and to test it out I put a little bit of green in it. I ended up with this color that I fell hard for. It was so crisp, so clean, so uncomplicated, so..... spring! But, what to DO with it? I had just started on a series of animals (well, birds and now insects too) and there weren't any animals that color. I couldn't even think of any vegetables that color - although it was close to lettuce....if lettuce were pearlized..... Then I saw a Lunesta commercial and inspiration came a calling.
A pair of Lunar Moths in this lovely shade of pearlized Celadon or moss green or spring green color - I'd actually call it beween Celadon and spring green. The 'eyes' on the wings are very detailed, but are not mosaiced. The edges of the moths are slightly raised above the mosaic work and have some texture. The background is shades of royal purple with occasional pieces of black egg shell.
This is a piece of 8" x 8" oak plywood, sealed with wood sealer. The sides and back of the plywood are painted black and signed and dated.
The egg shells are very firmly applied and flattened, then the whole top is sealed with gloss varnish. This maintains a certain 'feel' of mosaics. Egg shell mosaics are very pleasing to touch, you can wipes off fingerprints or anything else with a damp cloth.
There is a sawtooth hanger on the back top for easy hanging to a nail or hook.

Closeup of Background Mosaic Turquoise and Aqua

turquoise_aqua_mosaic

This is a lovely piece. On gessoed 1/2 " thick oak plywood. The mosaic section is 16 x 20. There is a surrounding 1 - 1 1/2 inch white strip on the sides to allow for framing. I regret that I left this section, I'm completely ignorant about how framing works and thought it might need some wood to mount the frame on. I doubt I'll ever do this on a piece again.
I'm very interested in animal/human mixes like mermaids. I'm especially interested that most of the time the mermaid looks completely human from the waist up - it seems to me that you'd have some 'animal' type features in the face. So, here I tried to make the face slightly dolphin-ish (I'm sure that's not a real word!). I actually began this piece in 1999 and put it aside. I just finished it in early 2011.

All my pieces are one of a kind in that the mosaic pieces are all in different places and different sizes and even different colors. I also never repeat a motif, but this is the closest to a 'standard' item that I have.
This is a wooden apple painted red and then done all over in egg shell mosaic, except for a circle on the bottom which allows it to sit flat (it is signed and dated inside the circle). It is 3 " tall and 8 1/2" diameter. There is a rawhide cord as the stem.
This has an amazing 'hand' feel. It's smooth and slightly cool and heavier than you'd expect.

Mosaic Egg with Violet

Apple Mosaics closeup

eggshell_mosaics_violet

This is a large wooden goose egg, 4 ¼” painted black. The violet flower is done in lavender egg shells with a yellow center and dark green leaves. The background is done in turquoise egg shells against the black. Egg shell mosaic covers the whole piece and there is a hook to hang it with on the top. This piece is not signed, as there is no place to sign it!
